Olympique Lyonnais starlet Miralem Pjanic has targeted a place in Europe’s elite eight prior to the club’s midweek Champions League encounter against Fiorentina.

Though OL progressed to the last 16 one year ago, there were swiftly dismissed by Barcelona. Beating the Viola on Tuesday evening would mean that les Gones would be guaranteed to top Group E and would therefore have the likelihood of enjoying an easier draw in the first knock-out round.

“I hope we will get through the last 16 of the Champions League,” he told his club’s official website.

The 19-year old is the only player in Claude Puel’s pool to have featured in all 19 of their fixtures to date this season. After a difficult first term at the Rhone giants following a switch from Metz, he is clearly enjoying the exposure.

“True, I have already played more than last season,” he noted. “I never doubted that. I always worked hard and I continue to do so. I am very happy with OL. I love this club, I love the people at the club. I appreciate the confidence from my coach.”

Asked about his style, he said, “I like to touch the ball often. I demand it. I like to quickly find good solutions.

“My position? Midfielder or behind the striker. I do not forget that I must work to recover the ball, but I feel free. Obviously I feel more comfortable on one side.”

Known as a set piece specialist already, Pjanic, who has been billed as Juninho’s replacement, knows there is still work to do with regards to his game, but he is making strong progress and can enhance the reputation he has built for himself with a strong showing in Tuscany.
