Didier Deschamps: I Didn’t Appreciate Marseille’s 5-5 Draw With Lyon
Ten goals in an all-time classic encounter were not enough to excite 'DD', who was more concerned about his side's defensive frailties in the aftermath of a quite remarkable game...
The topsy-turvy affair saw Marseille fall 1-0 and 2-1 down, but recover to lead 4-2 with only 11 minutes remaining. Claude Puel’s OL side rallied late on, turning the game on its head to lead 5-4, but les Phoceens were saved late on as Jeremy Toulalan could only turn the ball into his own net when trying to clear during a goalmouth scramble.
“It was a spectacular game,” Deschamps explained to France Football.
“I think many viewers appreciated it, but as a coach, not me! I doubt that Puel liked it much either.
“There was a lot of passivity on our part, including the first two goals we lost. If we need to score six goals to win, especially away from home, things will be complicated.
“Lyon have talent, okay, but I feel that a beautiful highway without tolls opened for us. We lost two points tonight. I am disappointed and frustrated.”
‘DD’ also hinted that changes will be made in his side after the international break.
“I'm not stubborn – it’s perhaps time to change. We have been insufficient in duels. There were many errors committed. We were failing in physical combat. In second period, we were ideally placed but we conceded three goals in ten minutes," he continued.
“It was an unlikely scenario and neither one of the other teams could control the game. At the end, the energy of despair rewarded us with a point.”
OM are six points behind league leaders Girondins de Bordeaux, although they do have a game in hand. Les Phoceens are presently eighth in the congested standings.
