Third-Placed Monaco Can Climb Higher In Ligue 1 – Guy Lacombe
Les Monegasques are showing strong signs that they are ready to end years of mediocrity, but Lacombe believes they can still perform better...
Monaco’s strong performance in the opening weeks of the season has surprised many Ligue 1 observers, but head coach Guy Lacombe is not necessarily pleased with les Monegasques’ efforts, indicating that they can still improve.
The Stade Louis II outfit could have gone into this weekend’s fixture against bottom side Grenoble topping the standings, but they were defeated 1-0 in Bordeaux and therefore slumped to third.
“[We have reached] only 50 or 60 per cent of our possibilities,” the moustachioed coach explained to L’Equipe on Friday. “The players have potential - they do not know their limits.”
Lacombe is known as something of an eccentric character on the sidelines, but his behaviour has been relatively sedate this term. He has explained that he has been forced to make a conscious effort to relax.
“I do a lot not to explode,” he said. “If I have not seemed as excited on the bench, it’s because I am careful with my behaviour since I’ve been in Monaco. The directors asked me to make an effort.”
Icelandic international star Eidur Gudjohnsen is expected to return to the Monaco side to face GF38 on Saturday along with Colombian livewire Juan Pablo Pino. In contrast, Brazilian offensive midfielder Nene, who is Ligue 1’s top scorer with nine goals, is suspended.
