Laurent Blanc Pleased With 'Dominant' Bordeaux After Monaco Success
Blanc feels that les Girondins deserved to beat les Monegasques by a scoreline greater than they achieved. Though opposing coach Guy Lacombe had his regrets, he agreed that the hosts were the better side...
Girondins de Bordeaux’s position atop Ligue 1 remains secure after they defeated Monaco 1-0 on Saturday evening at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, and head coach Laurent Blanc does not feel that the 1-0 result reflected his side’s superiority.
After a few awkward moments in the first ten minutes of the match, les Girondins would go on to control much of the game, though they found visiting goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier in fine form. However, when the custodian could only parry a diving header from Marouane Chamakh, Marc Planus reacted quickest to blast home.
“Just looking at the score, you could say we had trouble beating Monaco but if we analyse the match as a whole, then Bordeaux really dominated,” Blanc said after the game, according to Ligue 1’s official website. “We needed to be patient and keep an eye on their attacking players. We could have won by more. We played football and we created 17 chances. I'm very happy with my players and the way they obtained this result.”
Monaco coach Guy Lacombe, whose side have been one of the surprise packages of the season, lamented his side’s inability to score early on.
“The trouble is we had chances to score before they did and we didn't take them,” he complained. “If you look at the game then there can be no arguments over the scoreline. They always manage to score from a set piece.”
A greater challenge awaits Bordeaux on Tuesday evening, when they will tackle Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The Aquitaine outfit presently top Group A and only have one injury concern – centre-back Henrique - going into the fixture against the Bundesliga heavyweights.
