Alou Diarra Admits Swine Flu ‘Fear’ Before Montreal Trip With Bordeaux
The midfielder has confessed to having qualms about travelling to Canada for the Trophee des Champions at the weekend...
Girondins de Bordeaux claimed a hat-trick of trophies last season – the Trophee des Champions, the Coupe de la Ligue and the Ligue 1 title – and will defend the first of those cups on Saturday. However, Alou Diarra has reservations about making the arduous trip to Montreal, Canada, because of the swine flu problem in the country.
The holding midfielder, who has significant international experience with Raymond Domenech’s France side, spoke of his “fear” of travelling to Canada, a country in which around 10,000 have contracted the swine flu virus.
“I think the club will ensure that we are not in contact with infected people. Aside from that, I do not see what we can do. We, the players, we've had it explained,” he told L’Equipe.
Diarra thinks there is a simple solution to the problem: playing the match in Paris. “It would be easier,” he asserted, before hinting that there could be other reasons aside from the H1N1 virus that mean the match should be played on French soil. “We will accumulate a lot of fatigue. The league has decided to export the trophy to Montreal for its own reasons. We will try to adapt.”
Ligue 2 outfit Guingamp, who produced an incredible run to claim the Coupe de France, will provide the opposition, and Diarra has even suggested that the relative minnows could be favourites. “Guingamp are probably better prepared than us, because the Bretons resume their championship before us,” he said. “But we must win trophies when they are available.”
Bordeaux played out a scoreless draw against Olympique Lyonnais in the season’s curtain raiser last term, eventually defeating les Gones on penalty kicks.
