Marseille Owner Robert Louis-Dreyfus Loses Battle With Illness

Les Phoceens have been shocked by the saddening news of the owner's death...

Robert Louis-Dreyfus (Former Marseille Owner)
Controversial Olympique de Marseille owner Robert Louis Dreyfus, aged 63, lost his long battle with leukaemia, and passed away on Saturday evening.

The main shareholder of the club had presided over les Phoceens for a 13 year period, taking over the club at the request of the Mayor of the city. He guided the club through many highs and lows, but never managing to succeed in claiming a major title for les Phoceens, who have not lifted a major honour since the European Cup in 1993.

Under ‘RLD’ Marseille came tantalisingly close to major honours, missing out in the final of the UEFA Cup on two occasions – in 1999 against Parma and in 2004 versus Valencia. Similar heartbreak would be found in the Coupe de France, with defeats in back-to-back finals in 2006 and 2007. Meanwhile, the Ligue 1 title would also elude OM, with their most sustained push coming this season, in which they challenged for the title until the final day, although they finished second on two further occasions. In total, RLD invested over €200m in OM.

OM had a reputation of being a side that was quick to chop and change coaches during Louis-Dreyfus’ reign.  In total, there were an astronomical 19 coaching changes during RLD’s era, although this figure does include temporary appointments. Equally, there were seven different presidents.

Indeed, controversy was recently courted when Pape Diouf, who was a salaried president, left his post only a matter of weeks ago following a meeting with the club’s owner. This left a sour taste in the mouths of OM fans, who felt Louis-Dreyfus’ judgement had been poor on that matter.

But the late owner was not stranger to controversy, and was sentenced to a ten month sentence in jail and fined €200,000 for suspicious transfer activities in the late 1990s.

The AFP news agency confirmed on Sunday that the Louis-Dreyfus family intend to retain control of the club.
