Jean-Michel Aulas: Lyon Can Outspend Bordeaux & Marseille
There are unlikely to be wholesale changes at the Stade Gerland this summer due to the inclement financial conditions, and les Gones president believes that will be the case with all France’s big guns. However, he believes OL are relatively well placed.
Bordeaux have already swooped for Yoann Gourcuff for a fee supposed to be around €15 million, but les Girondins are not expected to make massive alterations to their squad otherwise. Meanwhile, Marseille will look to reinforce the defensive sectors of their team, although lavish spending is not predicted.
“I think OL will be soft at the start [of the transfer market] because all our players are under contract; we made sure our team was totally under contract,” declared Aulas to the club’s official website. “Bordeaux and Marseille will go through a difficult transfer window because the title has a number of consequences in terms of upgrades.”
But Aulas did intimate that Claude Puel, OL’s general manager, will be able to outspend his main rivals. “Claude Puel will have means at his disposal,” the outspoken president said. “We will also take into account the economic crisis and know that we can’t do everything. Overall, [Puel] has more resources than the others to act.”
There have been relatively few rumours circulating regarding Lyon’s actions in the transfer window of late. David Trezeguet of Juventus has been linked with the Rhone Valley club. Meanwhile, Roma player Jeremy Menez’s agent refuted speculation that OL are interested in his client and Barcelona have declared that there has been no contact with les Gones over Icelandic forward Eidur Gudjohnsen.
