Official: Erik Gerets To Step Down As Coach Of Marseille

Ligue 1 : Eric Gerets (Marseille)
Olympique de Marseille head coach Erik Gerets has announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, according to French radio station RMC. The 54-year-old has guided les Phoceens to the summit of Ligue 1 this season, where they currently enjoy a five-point advantage over Girondins de Bordeaux.

But the Belgian head coach’s future has been in some doubt for a considerable period of time. His contract is due to expire in June and club owner Robert-Louis Dreyfus has made little secret of his desire to keep hold of the ‘Lion of Rekem’.

Speculation has been rife in the French media in recent times as to Gerets’ future. Initially it was suggested that he could take the vacant role as Belgian national team coach but he was quickly linked to the free position at Bayern Munich when that became available yesterday. Gerets acted swiftly to snub out such rumours but has not been so prompt to deny claims linking him with a coaching position in Saudi Arabia, which first broke this morning. Al-Hilal Riyadh are the club leading the chase for his signature, according to reports in L’Equipe.

RMC reports that president Pape Diouf and sporting director Jose Anigo are targeting a French-speaking foreign coach to take the reins at the Stade Velodrome. Mircea Lucescu, whose Shakhtar Donetsk side knocked OM out of the UEFA Cup only a fortnight ago, was suggested, but this, apparently, has been rejected.

Meanwhile, Bruno Metsu - who, contrary to RMC’s own suggestions, is French-born - has been linked with the position. Metsu, 55, is best known for leading Senegal to victory over France in the 2002 World Cup.

Doubtless the name of Didier Deschamps, a veteran of over 100 Ligue 1 games for OM, will also be mentioned in connection with the post, although there is no concrete evidence to suggest that the former Juventus coach will apply for the role.
