Olympique de Marseille President Pape Diouf Lauds Coach Erik Gerets
OM’s president has publicly praised his Belgian head coach, who has carried les Phoceens to the top of Ligue 1. Despite this, his future in Provence is unclear...
Belgian head coach Erik Gerets has proved to be something of a hit at the Stade Velodrome this season, carrying Olympique de Marseille to the top of Ligue 1, where they currently enjoy a two point lead over Girondins de Bordeaux. Gerets’ future with the Mediterranean giants is as yet not clear and president Pape Diouf went public with his regard for the coach today.
Speaking in relation to Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Lorient – a match in which OM had to recover from a half time deficit to win – Diouf was not shy in giving Gerets his thumbs up. “It always comes down to the approach the coach has before matches,” he told Football365. “We moved very coherently [against Lorient].”
But Gerets’ matchday manner was not the only aspect of his management that was to receive praise. The signings that OM made in January were also noted as an important factor in Marseille’s recent acceleration. Sylvain Wiltord, who arrived from Stade Rennais, inadvertently setup Renato Civelli’s equaliser while a powerful finish from Brazilian acquisition Brandao won the match for the Stade Velodrome club.
“The two or three [winter] signings have given the team a lot more strength,” Diouf said. “I think the changes have been very beneficial to the team. Furthermore, Brandao was an important part of the comprehensive control we enjoyed in this match.”
A maligned figure initially, Brandao has now scored five goals in ten Ligue 1 starts with his new club, firing them to five successive wins.
Meanwhile, Erik Gerets’ position at the club is still somewhat opaque. It was announced late last week that he would not take the Belgian national team job – a role he had been much touted for – but he has yet to commit his future to Marseille.
