Raymond Domenech Hints That Steve Mandanda Will Retain The French Gloves
Blessed with two fine goalkeepers, France head coach Raymond Domenech has strongly hinted that Olympique de Marseille’s No. 1 will retain the honour of starting for les Bleus.
It has been a point of contention in the national team all season as to whether Steve Mandanda of Olympique de Marseille or Hugo Lloris of Olympique Lyonnais should be France’s No. 1 goalkeeper. Raymond Domenech, the national team coach, is set to choose the former for the forthcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against Lithuania.
Domenech plumped for Mandanda at the start of the season when his form was outdoing Lloris’ and has stuck with him ever since. The Lyon custodian has been superb over the last month, but his form will not be enough to change the controversial chief of les Bleus, who prefers “stability and continuity in this position”.
“To change the goalkeeper after every match, it would not help the performance of one or the other,” declared Domenech to L’Equipe. “Maturity is very dependent of stability. This destabilising will not come to anything.”
Indeed, Domenech said that he always seeks the advice of goalkeeping coach Bruno Martini on such matters. It was Martini that had a big say in the Fabien Barthez and Gregory Coupet dual, and he appears to have a similarly important role now.
“Bruno chooses, I decide,” Domenech said. “He has an intrinsic knowledge of the capabilities of a goalkeeper. As staff, we are always in harmony when we decide something. I listen to arguments. At the end, there is only one who decides, and that’s me.”
Mandanda will be hoping for a more successful evening on Saturday than his last outing in the French national jersey, when he was criticised after les Bleus’ 2-0 loss to Argentina.
