Record TV Audience For Lyon – Marseille
Although the match finished in a tedious scoreless draw, the recent top-of-the-table clash between Lyon and Marseille attracted a record domestic television audience.
It was not the spectacle that the LFP would have wanted to give the viewers of the much-anticipated Olympique Lyonnais versus Olympique de Marseille game. However, the match still managed to attract a record audience for a Ligue 1 fixture.
According to Médiamétrie, the match was watched by 2.91 million viewers on Canal+, a subscription television service in France, taking an audience share of 11.9%. This figure represents an identical viewership to that recorded for a fixture between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille back in season 2004/05.
Saturday’s peak audience was estimated to be 3.27 million, which, of course, largely switched on in the first half but were put off by the turgid nature of the game, which finished in a chanceless 0-0 draw.
Viewing figures of Ligue 1 games on Canal+ are certainly on the rise. This match was the third time this season that the domestic audience has topped 2 million, with the other occasions being the 4-2 victory for PSG against Marseille in week ten and the clash between Lyon and Girondins de Bordeaux, which was won 2-1 by les Gones in week 14.
An average viewership of 1.71 million represents a rise of over 25% from last season.
