The Belgium international is "happy" that the striker is back firing following injury but does not believe that David Moyes's good record at the Etihad Stadium will matter

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany is relishing the opportunity to play against Wayne Rooney on Sunday and hopes that the Manchester United striker is at the top of his game.

Rooney has scored three times in two games since returning to the first team after a gashed forehead kept him out of action but the City captain dismisses the suggestion that he wants the forward's form to dip for the Manchester derby.

"No, it's brilliant. You want to play against top players at their best," he told reporters. "That's how I feel about it. I always want to play against players when they are at their best.

"I'm really happy for Wayne that he's on top form. This is the great thing about the Premier League, you play against top strikers all the time, but there are many players to watch out for in both teams."

David Moyes and Manuel Pellegrini head into their first Manchester derby as managers, though the Scot recorded four consecutive victories at the Etihad Stadium between 2008 and 2010 while in charge of Everton.

But Kompany does not believe that those past results will have any bearing on the outcome on Sunday.

"It's a different team, it's a different season and I would say there has never been anything too predictable in the derby," he added. "Nobody predicted we would win 6-1 at Old Trafford [in 2011-12], that they would beat us at the Etihad or that we would win at Old Trafford [last season]. I guess that's what the fans want too. It is unpredictable.

"It's always a game you look forward to. I don't think it's just the people in Manchester but all over the world who look forward to enjoying it.

"It's a game that attracts a lot of attention. I never take it for granted and I feel blessed that I am able to participate in those games. You do your best to make sure you play well in these games."
