Vertonghen insists on top-four focus from Tottenham

The Spurs defender has called on his team-mates to put memories of Basel behind them and "stay together" ahead of the end of the league season
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has called for his team-mates to focus on putting their Europa League agony behind them and concentrate on gaining Champions League qualification.

The north London club were eliminated from Europe's second-highest competition by Swiss Super League champions Basel 4-1 on penalties on Thursday after the two sides drew 4-4 on aggregate after extra-time.

Despite the disappointment of exiting the competition, Vertonghen is confident that his side can continue pushing for an all-important Champions League spot.

"We have to stay together and to go for that top-four place in the Premier League," he told the club's official website.

"We have had a rest, we clear our heads and we come back against Manchester City.

Tottenham currently sit in fifth place, one point behind local rivals Arsenal in third place and equal on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, who also have a game in hand.

"A lot of players could be coming back, important players, and we only have big games now. City, Chelsea; all cup finals," he added.

"We go for the highest place possible."
