The Italian is resigned to the fact that retaining the title is impossible though he remains determined to carry through the form that saw them demolish Newcastle 4-0
With eight games remaining in the domestic campaign, City are now 15 points behind rivals Manchester United, meaning that a retention of the title they won last year is looking increasingly improbable.
However, Mancini admits this and with an FA Cup semi-final against either United or Chelsea looming, the Italian is keen to end the season with a flourish.
“When we play like this we play well,” said Mancini. "It is impossible to win the title but it is important to finish well. Now we have two months and it is important to stay in form.
“Now we have 8 games and an [FA Cup] semi-final, we need to continue this way.
“[Newcastle] defended very well, it was difficult. We didn’t have a good tempo in first 25 minutes but after we were better. We were quicker and we scored.”

"Kompany is very important to us,” said Mancini. “We played without him for 60 days. There are some players who are very important to us, like him and Yaya [Toure], who we lost for four or five games.
“I don’t think he’s 100% as its second game after 60 days. He needs to work more. He’s an important player for us.”
