Sigurdsson ‘really pleased’ after choosing Tottenham over Liverpool
The 23-year-old believes his decision to move to White Hart Lane has been justified after his recent form, even though it was difficult turning down former manager Brendan Rodgers
Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson believes he made the right decision to turn down a move to Liverpool in favour of the north London club last summer. The Reds were favourites to sign the Iceland international after he impressed on loan at Swansea under the tutelage of then-manager Brendan Rodgers, but the 23-year-old opted for a move to White Hart Lane.
And, ahead of his side’s trip to Anfield on Sunday, Sigurdsson says Spurs superior form both domestically and on the European stage has justified his decision.
"I'm really pleased I made that choice," the midfielder told reporters. "There are so many good players here and hopefully we can be in the Champions League next season.
"It was hard to turn down Liverpool because I know Brendan. It was more about that than any of the history Liverpool have.
"When Tottenham came in, I had seen how they were last year and in the previous two years.
"They finished fourth last year and were unlucky not to get Champions League football, and you could see that this is a great club with fantastic players."
Tottenham are currently third in the Premier League, 12 points ahead of Liverpool, while they head into the second leg of their last-16 Europa League tie against Inter with a 3-0 advantage.
