Gascoigne in intensive care but on the road to recovery, says former Tottenham team-mate Mabbutt
The former Spurs captain confirms reports that the 45-year-old is being closely monitored by hospital staff in Arizona following an adverse reaction to his detox programme
Former Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt has revealed that Paul Gascoigne is in intensive care at a hospital in Arizona but says that his condition is not life-threatening and that the former England star is on the road to recovery.Concerns were raised over the 45-year-old's health when he recently broke down on stage at a charity event as he revealed that he had lapsed in his battle with alcoholism.
Gascoigne was moved to the intensive care unit following an adverse reaction during his detox programme at the Cottonwood rehabilitation centre last week, though Mabbutt insists that the former midfielder can recover his health once again.
"The first part of the treatment was the detox and unfortunately Paul had a very bad reaction to the detox which meant that as a precaution he was moved from the clinic to a hospital where he was put in intensive care so that they could monitor him," he told Sky Sports.
"But I spoke to his medical team here in the UK who spoke to Paul this morning. It's not a life-threatening situation and Paul is back on the road to recovery."
Gascoigne scored 10 goals in 57 appearances for England but since retiring in 2004 has battled with alcoholism and mental health issues.
