Arsenal need character to beat Chelsea, says Mertesacker

Arsenal need character to beat Chelsea, says Mertesacker

The Gunners centre-back calls on his team to prove themselves in their Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge as they aim to fare better against their elite peers

Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker has called on his team-mates to show character when they take on Chelsea on Sunday, after a disappointing showing last time out in the Premier League when they lost 2-0 to Manchester City.

The German feels that the Gunners can compete with any side in the top flight and is confident that they can get a positive result at Stamford Bridge, having triumphed 5-3 in the corresponding fixture last season.

40/1 Per Mertesacker is 40/1 with William Hill to score first in Chelsea v Arsenal
"We need our character on Sunday. That is the most important thing. We can go to Chelsea with optimism. We showed last season that we can go and win there," Mertesacker told The Sun.

"We proved we can score a lot of goals away from home but we have to show our confidence.

"We're a good squad when we put out opponents under pressure. We are always dangerous. That must be our target at Chelsea as well. Let's see what we can do. It's a busy week and everyone is playing a lot. Let's show our ability and character at Chelsea."

Arsenal stand eight points behind the Blues going into the game, six behind fourth-placed local rivals Tottenham, but Mertesacker insists that they can do better than their defeat to City in their last league match.

"If you want to be in the top four you have to compete with Chelsea, Man City, Manchester United and Tottenham," the defender continued. "These teams are in this zone. We need to win against those four as much as we can — it is a good point to show how we are.

"In the second half against Manchester City, we showed our character, which was much better than the first half. We were a bit scared against Man City from the beginning. We were not that confident. The second half was much better. With a bit of luck we could have scored in two or three situations.

"We were a bit scared against Manchester City from the beginning [but] the second half was much better"

"We have to take results, the FA Cup win against Swansea City [1-0 in a third-round replay on Wednesday] was vital to prove that we were ready to compete.

"We have a good squad; good young players and experienced players. We have a good balance. But everybody has to stick together.

"The next few weeks will be busy and we now have another FA Cup game. The confidence against Swansea was from the beginning, we were on our front foot. It was good to get our confidence back after the City game.”

Florentino Perez is being unsurprisingly amicable with this whole thing, but there are stings and barbs for Jose Mourinho buried in some of his words, such as: "Achievements this season haven't been sufficient for demands of a club such as Real Madrid, or a coach like Mourinho."
7:15 PM BST
More from Real Madrid club president Florentino Perez regarding Jose Mourinho's departure: "We've come to this decision just now although its something thats been back of our mind for some time. We have no pre-contract signed with any manager. This is something we have to look at over the coming days

"The time is right to go our seperate ways and once again I would like to thank Jose Mourinho for all his hard work."

Jerry Moses ‏(@adi_rijez) tweeted: "Real madrid need a manager not a team breaker."

True, Jose Mourinho has caused more friction than he has joy at Real Madrid in the last month, but he has guided the Blancos to three consecutive Champions League semi-finals and his side broke the record for points collected in a single Liga season last year!
