Manchester City captain Kompany fit to face Wigan, confirms Platt
The Blues captain passed a late fitness test to put in a man-of-the-match display against Chelsea on Sunday and will feature against the Latics, but Gael Clichy remains sidelined
Manchester City first-team coach David Platt has confirmed that Vincent Kompany is fit enough to start against Wigan on Wednesday.
Speculation had suggested the Belgium international would be rested for the trip to face Roberto Martinez’s side, after he played against title-rivals Chelsea just 48 hours after being confined to crutches.
However, Platt stated that the 26-year-old is more than capable of playing again at the DW Stadium and praised the efforts of Kompany’s central defensive partner Matija Nastasic, whose performances have kept Joleon Lescott out of the team.
"It's not a case of it being too much at all," Platt told reporters. "Vinnie would have still been feeling the effects of the injury that he picked up last Wednesday in the Chelsea game but he got through the game and got through it very well.
"There were no after effects and he iced it straight afterwards as a precaution. We don't really have any concerns for him tomorrow night."
Platt added: "In the first couple of games, he [Nastasic] had to get used to English football but he has done that very quickly.
"The really, really good performance - he has had several good ones, but the real one where it might have been a bit alien to him - was when we went down to West Ham.
"You knew the ball was coming in, they were hitting the diagonal balls towards Andy Carroll, and I thought he acquitted himself exceptionally well."
Platt also confirmed that Lescott is fully fit despite him not being named on City’s bench to face Chelsea, while revealing that Gael Clichy will miss the trip to Wigan and the visit of Everton on Saturday.
"Joleon is fine," Platt said. "He will be available for selection [on Wednesday].
"Gael is progressing well, if not better, than we probably expected, but he won't be involved tomorrow.
"I don't think he will be on the training pitch even towards the end of this week, so Saturday [against Everton] is out as well."
