thumbnail Hello,

The Portuguese manager has slammed his side's performance after a 1-0 defeat against Wigan, although refused to criticise the fans who booed him and his players afterwards

Andre Villas-Boas believes Tottenham’s performance in their shock 1-0 loss to Wigan at White Hart Lane was their worst of the season so far.

The Portuguese manager accepted responsibility for the result, and has targeted a swift improvement in Spurs’ home form.

“I think it was a poor performance from us,” Villas-Boas told reporters after the match.

“We didn’t manage to play well, to keep the ball and to show the passing we showed in a couple of games before.

“And not only down to our poor performance but down to Wigan because they were excellent during the 90 minutes.

“We’ll reflect on maybe the poorest performance of the season so far.”

The loss, the second time in three years that Wigan have won at White Hart Lane since their 9-1 demolition, prompted a chorus of boos from the home crowd, but the former Porto manager refused to criticise the supporters.

“It’s nothing new,” he continued. “We understand that frustration. We don’t do things to punish them or for the fans to show revolt. We do things for the benefit of the team.

“They want to win but we want to win as much as them.”

The result is Spurs second successive home defeat in the league, and Villas-Boas’ side have been far more impressive on the road this season.

“What we want to improve is our performances at home,” the ex-Chelsea boss added. “The results away have been a little bit better for us.

“I think we know about this responsibility, it comes with a good win, like against Aston Villa, it brings a bit more stability. But then we played the European Champions.”
