Terry undecided over FA appeal

The Chelsea captain was handed a four-match ban and a £220,000 fine after being found guilty of using racially abusive language towards Anton Ferdinand in October 2011

John Terry has not decided whether to appeal his four-game ban and £220,000 fine after being found guilty by the Football Association of using racially abusive language towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

Terry was acquitted of abusing Ferdinand by Westminster Magistrates' Court in July, but the FA's disciplinary committee announced on Thursday that the 31-year-old was guilty of using “abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour, which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race”.

The incident related to the charges occurred in Chelsea's Premier League match against QPR at Loftus Road in October 2011.

A statement released by Terry's management agency said: "Mr. Terry is disappointed that the FA Regulatory Commission has reached a different conclusion to the clear not guilty verdict of a court of law. He has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal."

Terry has 14 days to appeal against the verdict upon receiving the receipt of the written reasons for the decision by the independent FA panel.

Chelsea have also released a statement regarding Terry's verdict but have declined to comment on the outcome.

"Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today's decision by the Football Association regarding John Terry," Chelsea's statement said.

"We also recognise that John has the right to appeal that decision. It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time."
