The Gunners captain picked up a knock during his side's 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday but insists that he will not be sidelined for any period of time

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has allayed fears over his fitness after he picked up a knock in the Gunners' 2-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

The defender was pictured having strapping applied to his ankle at a training session with the Belgium national team as they prepare for World Cup qualifiers with Wales and Croatia.

However, the 26-year-old has been quick to dismiss suggestions that he will be out of action upon his return to north London.

"It is fine, it just my ankle from last week - but it is okay," he told Sky Sports.

Arsene Wenger's men are the only side who have yet to concede a goal in the Premier League this season, having kept clean sheets against Sunderland, Stoke and Liverpool.

And the Belgian believes the presence of recently-appointed assistant manager Steve Bould has helped Arsenal shore up a rearguard which has attracted criticism in recent years.

He added: "He is our assistant now and has a lot of experience at a high level with Arsenal. We work a lot on our defensive play and you can see that with our three clean sheets"
