Fernando Torres eyes 'magical season' with Chelsea

Fernando Torres eyes 'magical season' with Chelsea

The Spanish striker is looking for a return to his Liverpool form of old in the Blues' search for trophies and insists he is ready to improve on last campaign's goal scoring tally

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is aiming to put last year's goal scoring problems behind him and return to his best in the club's quest for trophies as he eyes a "magic season".

The Spaniard is the only out and out striker left at the club after Didier Drogba's departure to Chinese side, Shanghai Shenhua. And having been reassured as to his Chelsea future following a substitute's role in the Champions League final, Torres has started the new campaign with a bang, netting twice in three games.

The former Liverpool man conceded he has more responsibility on his shoulders with Drogba's departure, but is aiming for a return to his Anfield form which saw him revered as one of the world's best strikers.

Torres told Chelsea Magazine, "Didier is not here anymore so there is more responsibility for me and I'm ready for the challenge.

"Hopefully, everything is going to be OK and we will work hard.

"Now I am looking for new personal targets, which is to get as many goals as possible and, hopefully, I will score more than I did in my best season at Liverpool.

"We have the squad to do that and we have five more trophies to play for, so it could be a magic season."

The Euro 2012 golden boot winner was criticised at times last season for failing to take up goal scoring positions, but after his first full season at the club, insists he now knows his role within the Chelsea team.

"For me, the striker has to be in the box," Torres stated.

"Once you have to run into the channel you have lost your position. So I try to spend more time in the box and leave that job for the wingers. Obviously when a striker goes to the channels, the opposite winger has to come inside and finish as a striker.

"This is the job – we have to make sure we are all working in the same way. But the striker has to be in the middle and the wingers go into the channels. These are the basics of football."

And the 28-year-old admits that following the club's lavish summer outlay on stars such as Eden Hazard and Oscar, trophies are a realistic target should he fire on all cylinders.

He added: "In my first full season we got two trophies, which is the thing I was looking for when I came.

"But now I have more objectives, more personal targets and this season is very important for me. We have the chance to win more trophies this season.

"I think all the fans are excited about the league again, after a couple of years of not winning the trophy, so I think it’s a good time, especially me, to give something back to the fans."

Torres insists last season wasn’t a complete personal failure, claiming he had to adapt to his new role within the Chelsea team and praised his manager Roberto Di Matteo for getting the best out of the squad.

He continued: "Last season I became a more complete player. I played in a different position and the style of Chelsea was different to the style I used to play.

"I adapted for the good of the team but I like to play on the shoulder of the defenders, play in the space and receive passes that Hazard, Mata, Lamps or Oscar can make behind the defenders.

"You need to balance things and know what's right for the team and that's the job of the coaching staff. They have to get the best out of us – and they did last season when Robbie came in. He understood what we needed and we did very well. Hopefully, this season he’s right as well."
