The former Chelsea coach was disappointed that his side were unable to pick up their first win of the season, insisting that their first-half showing should have earned a win

Following Tottenham’s 1-1 home draw with West Brom on Saturday, Andre Villas-Boas is adamant his side should have won.

Spurs took the lead in the 74th minute through Benoit Assou-Ekotto, with the fans seemingly expecting the hosts to hold on for three points after opening the scoring in the dying stages, but West Brom fought back.

A stoppage-time equaliser from James Morrison saw Clarke’s unbeaten-start as Baggies manager continue, but Villas-Boas was disappointed his side were not able to do enough to claim the victory.

The Portuguese told Sky Sports: “I think the second-half was very open and both teams had big opportunities. We had a very good first-half where we created a lot of good opportunities, and our idea was to go in at half time one goal ahead.

“We were pushing hard in the first half to get it, [the] second half made the game open a bit. 

“When we made the changes to bring another striker and put two up front, I think both teams then had chances. So it’s almost like in the first half.

“We should have won it.  In the second-half it’s fair that both teams equalled each other. [But] For all we did in the first-half I think we deserve better.

“But West Brom really pushed hard to get the equaliser and from a set play we conceded. But let’s push on and focus on the next game.”

Villas-Boas praised CHelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku's impact on the match and also lamented his defence's failure to close out the game.

He continued: “[The second half was] A little bit too open. After we scored we wanted to close it a bit to keep it steady.

“When Lukaku came on he was a handful, and created lots of problems, [being] strong and holding balls to his colleagues.

“I think maybe we should have been more composed when we got our 1-0, kept the ball a little bit further in our side, and in the end it could have made a difference.

“The game escaped us just in the last minute so this is disappointing, but we have to make sure that we understand that what we did in the first half was extremely good, and move on from there.”
