The Icelandic midfielder is happy to have broken his duck in his first game for Andre Villas-Boas' side, but wants to get underway in the Premier League as soon as possible

New Tottenham signing Gylfi Sigurdsson has spoken of his delight at scoring on his debut for the club against Stevenage on Wednesday.

The Iceland international joined Andre Villas-Boas’ side earlier this month for a fee believed to be around £7 million, following an impressive six-month loan at Swansea City.

And Sigurdsson, who admitted that he opted to join Spurs over interest from Liverpool with a view to winning trophies, is now keen to break his duck in the top flight with the new Premier League season approaching.

“It’s always nice to score, but the most important thing is to get used to playing football again and getting back to full fitness,” the midfielder told the club’s official website.

“It would be better to score in Premier League game, but nice to score my first goal of the season and have that confidence for the next couple of weeks.

“I’m off the mark, but it doesn’t really matter in the friendlies. There is no point scoring in the friendlies and not scoring in the league, so it’s about getting back to full fitness at the moment and we’ll see where we are at the start of the season.”

Fellow new arrival Jan Vertonghen also made his bow for the club in the 2-0 friendly win against the League One side, with Iago Falque notching the second late on.
