Ridgewell aiming to break into England setup

West Brom defender Liam Ridgewell has labelled playing for England as a "massive ambition" in his career.
The former Aston Villa and Birmingham player has represented the Three Lions at under-19 and under-21 level but is yet to receive a call up to the senior side.
However, with Roy Hodgson taking the England hotseat, Ridgewell still hopes to get that first international cap, the former Liverpool boss signed the left-back at the Hawthorns and the 27-year-old is optimistic of reuniting with his old coach within the England setup.
"It's a massive ambition in my life to play for England," he told the Sunday Mercury newspaper.
"Wearing the Three Lions on the shirt is what every English footballer aspires to."
Despite heavy competition for defensive places in Hodgson’s squad, Ridgewell insists that anything can happen in sport and he’d be ready if selected.
"Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines are obviously in the squad, and rightly so, but if the opportunity came up for me then I would grab it with both hands," he continued.
"It's the pinnacle of any player's career to be capped for your country. You just never know what lies around the corner."
However, Ridgewell maintains his primary concern is ensuring West Brom perform well during the upcoming season, rather than focusing solely on an international call.
"The main aim for this season is to stay in the Premier League and not only do that but improve on last season," he added.
"I want a good and consistent season with West Brom first and foremost.
"But if I got a call from Roy Hodgson then I'd be very happy."
