Scholes feeling sorry for Beckham over Team GB snub
The Manchester United midfielder believes his former teammate should have been picked in Stuart Pearce's squad due to his role in Great Britain's successful Olympic bid
Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has admitted that he feels sorry for David Beckham after his former teammate was not picked in Stuart Pearce’s Team GB squad.
Beckham was seen by many as one of the most likely candidates to fill one of the three over-23 places in the 18-man squad, but Pearce opted to leave out the former England captain.
The former United midfielder played a pivotal role in bringing the Olympics to Great Britain, acting in an ambassadorial role, and Scholes thinks his friend has been hard done by.
Speaking to MUTV, Scholes said: "It's a shame about Becks. It's surprising as well, after everything David did to help London get the Olympics.
"That's Stuart Pearce's decision, but I feel sorry for David as I'm sure he'd have loved to have played in it."
Scholes’ current United colleague Ryan Giggs was picked in the squad for the tournament, as well as being named captain, and the former England international expects Team GB to do well.

He continued: "From speaking to Ryan, I can tell he’s looking forward to it. I hope they do well.
"I don’t see any reason why they won’t do as they’ve got a very good squad. Obviously there are other squads in it who want to win the gold medal but I’m sure Ryan will lead the team well and hopefully they’ll go a long way in the tournament.
"Ryan's been unfortunate as Wales didn't manage to qualify [for a World Cup or European Championship] whilst he was playing for them.
"So it’s a good chance for him to play in a big tournament. I just hope they can do well and go all the way and win it."
