The former Rangers captain has been using the social networking site to try and lure the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward to Loftus Road
Owen was released by Manchester United at the end of the last campaign after three seasons at Old Trafford and is yet to agree new terms with another side.
And despite being stripped of the Rangers captaincy after his sending off and subsequent behaviour in the Londoners’ final game of last season at Manchester City, Barton has taken it upon himself to try and lure the former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker to the club.
“Watching Premier League years 98/99 season. @themichaelowen destroying back fours here. Same haircut now, 13 yrs on as well, weird!” Tweeted the former Newcastle midfielder.
He then further flattered 32-year-old Owen by tweeting: "I think @themichaelowen is the best player England has ever produced. For match winning performances, none better!”.
Owen, another prominent user of the social networking site, lamented the injuries that have blighted his career.
“I was only able to play without being compromised from 17 to 19. Huge sense of 'what if' but unfortunately my mind could but my body couldn't cope with the demands of so much so young. Despite that, still think I've got enough in me to perform for another couple of years!,” he tweeted.
And with that admission that he wants to continue playing for a few more years, Barton decided to make his move.
“@themichaelowen get down the smoke mate. If u come here we could sort out ur gear. If u sign for us, I'll even take u shopping... Haha,” he tweeted.
Whether Owen will be tempted into moving down to London though is as yet unknown, as he is believed to be keen on staying in the north where his family are based.
