Rooney: Losing title to Manchester City was sickening but United will be back

The England striker believes that the Red Devils' squad will recover from their heartbreak and improve next season but criticised the reaction of the Sunderland fans as "sad"

Wayne Rooney is backing Manchester United to "come back stronger" next season after losing out on the Premier League title to rivals Manchester City on the final day of the season.

Sergio Aguero’s late goal against QPR snatched the title from United after the Red Devils had won away at Sunderland, but the forward is confident that they can respond next year.

Rooney told the club's official website: "We’ll be back, no worries about that, we’ll be back stronger."

The Belgian is one of the hottest prospects in Europe and has hinted at moving to Manchester for some time

The striker reflected on the rollercoaster that was the final day of the season, with the title switching destinations throughout a dramatic afternoon.

“Of course, you wish it hadn’t happened like that for our fans," he noted.

"And for us as players, it was sickening really to lose the title like that.

"Our fans were brilliant all day, even when Man City scored their first goal. We obviously knew on the pitch they had gone 1-0 up and we were also aware when QPR went 2-1 up.

"When the final whistle went, we didn’t really know what the score was. But then we heard the Sunderland fans cheering.

“It was sad to see that because they should be supporting their own team really. They didn’t have the best of seasons themselves so for them to be cheering like that was sad. It was something that myself and a lot of the players won’t forget.”
