Everton midfielder Darron Gibson was delighted with the impact that he was able to make in former club Manchester United's Premier League title push, after delivering a hammer blow against rivals City with the winner for his new club in Tuesday's 1-0 victory.

Gibson, 24, who spent seven years at Old Trafford and found himself frozen out of the first-team picture this season, thinks the goal will have gone down well with his former team-mates.

The win not only saw Everton climb above Norwich City into the top of the table, but also allowed United to draw level with City at the top of the table, following their 2-0 victory over Stoke City.

“I know my phone will be packed with texts from United. I've got a lot of mates there,” told reporters.

"I'm just delighted to get my first goal."

After finding his opportunities increasingly limited under Sir Alex Ferguson, the Irish international is pleased to be able to get back into the swing of things after his bargain £500k January switch.

"I was a bit frustrated in the last few games because I didn't really manage many shots, but I'm buzzing about it.

"I'm an Everton player now but it does mean that little bit more to score against City, aye — although really I'm just glad we got the three points."

Following the game, a number of current Red Devils sent Gibson congratulatory messages via Twitter, including Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.

Ferdinand said: "Just organising a FREE meal for Darron."

While Rooney added: "Yeeeeeeesssssssss Gibbo. Love u kid."
