Blackburn Rovers have insisted that club captain Christopher Samba will not be sold in the January transfer window, despite the player having handed in a transfer request.
Samba confirmed his intention to leave the club in writing on Monday, as speculation mounted that the likes of Tottenham and QPR were set to make a bid for his services.
However, Rovers have moved to quash any suggestion that the 27-year-old will be allowed to leave Ewood Park, affirming their intention to see the defender honour the contract he signed last season.
A statement on the club’s official website reads: “Blackburn Rovers reiterate that team captain Christopher Samba is not for sale.
“The player signed a new contract with the club less than a year ago which runs until June 2015.”
Samba has made over 160 appearances for Blackburn since signing from Hertha Berlin in 2007, and whilst there has been speculation over his future for a number of seasons, the Congo defender signed a new deal last year to quell reports suggesting he could join Arsenal.
However, with boss Steve Kean revealing that bids for the player have already been turned down, and with the chance to join Harry Redknapp's title-chasing side or link up with former manager Mark Hughes at Loftus Road, the Premier League strugglers face a fight to keep their skipper.
