Wayne Rooney has been rested for Manchester United's Boxing Day clash with Wigan at Old Trafford, with both the 26-year-old and Danny Welbeck dropping the the bench.

Dimitar Berbatov parters Javier Hernandez up front after the Bulgarian scored United's final goal in the 5-0 rout of Fulham on Wednesday.

Phil Jones has failed to recover from a facial injury sustained in a clash with Clint Dempsey at Craven Cottage, whilst Chris Smalling is reportedly suffering from tonsillitis, meaning Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia must provide cover in defence.

Ji-Sing Park and Darron Gibson come into the Red Devils midfield, whilst Anders Lindegaard maintains his starting berth in goal with David de Gea amongst the substitutes.
