Liverpool have confirmed the transfer of left-back Emiliano Insua to Sporting Lisbon, with the Argentine defender signing a five-year-deal with the Portuguese outfit.

"I am very glad, really eager to start practicing and playing. Sporting are one of the big Portuguese clubs and are recognised for their work in developing young players. They are a club who want to win and clinch titles. I will give my all for Sporting," the 22-year-old told the club's official website.

Insua joined the Merseyside club in 2007 after impressing during an initial loan move from Boca Juniors in January of that year, with the move made permanent the following summer.

However with Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena ahead of him in the pecking order, the player found first-team action hard to come by, making just 16 appearances in his first two seasons with the club.

Yet the 2009-2010 season finally brought a regular role for the Argentine international in the Liverpool side as he made 44 appearances and registered his first – and only – goal for the club, with a fantastic 25-yard volley against Arsenal in the Carling Cup.

Last season again saw Insua reduced to a squad player as he moved to Turkish side Galatasaray on a season-long loan deal, making 19 appearances as they struggled to make an impact on the league, finishing 8th.

Despite being the only recognised left-back at Anfield upon his return this summer, an offer from Fiorentina was accepted for the player but Insua failed to agree personal terms with the Italian side.

Now with the arrival of Jose Enrique from Newcastle United, who has quickly established himself as Kenny Dalglish's first choice left-back, Insua has opted to move elsewhere in his search for first team football.
