Red Devils defender believes Harry Redknapp's side will visit Old Trafford on Monday without fear as Ferguson's men prepare for game with inexperienced back line

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling anticipates a close game on Monday at home to Tottenham.

The 21-year old has played for the Red Devils at centre-back and at right-back since joining from Fulham, and has impressed in recent matches.

He told the club’s official website: "Spurs are a great side with so many good players. They're an attacking team.

"Harry Redknapp gives them the freedom to go and play, as we saw the other night when they scored five.”

The north London club visit Old Trafford on the back of their impressive display in the Europa League against Hearts, with Luka Modric likely to return.

He continued: "They'll come here, which was a fortress for us last season, but I'm sure it will be without fear, and it's usually a close game when we play Tottenham."

United go into their match on the back of a tense 2-1 victory against West Bromwich Albion in which experienced centre-back duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both went off with injuries.

Smalling will now take on more responsibility alongside fellow youngsters Phil Jones and Jonny Evans, although Patrice Evra is set to return to complete the back four after a knee injury.
