Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for Javier Hernandez after the Mexican striker’s double in the 4-0 win over Wigan helped the Red Devils extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points.MORE...
Hernandez was given a starting berth in place of Dimitar Berbatov and rewarded his manager with a goal in each half. The Mexican international produced two good finishes to help his side extend their unbeaten run against Wigan and Ferguson praised his quality in front of goal.
“We got the goal from a breakaway and it was a terrific finish from Chicharito," he told Sky Sports News.
“That is what he is good at and it gives us an advantage inside the penalty box. He is very, very good [in front of goal].
“Obviously we hope when he does get these chances he puts them away.
“But his percentage [of chances converted into goals] is very high and we are very pleased with his performance today.”
Despite the big scoreline Manchester United did not have everything their own way as Wigan caused them some problems.
Indeed the hosts had plenty of chances to take the lead but the Reds Devils had 40-year-old 'keeper Edwin van der Sar to thank for being on level terms.
Ferguson added, “They were all over us in the first 20 minutes and they play very good football.
“They have threats going forward in Hugo Rodallega and Charles N’Zogbia. We hung on a bit and it did take us a while to get used to the pitch.
“They had some decent attempts and we have to thank our goalkeeper. Edwin van der Sar was terrific and he stood up really well with two or three good saves.”
But Ferguson was delighted with his side’s response in the second-half and praised their display after the break.
He said, “Getting the goal settled us down a bit but after that we did play well. Second-half we really did play well.
“It was an exceptional performance we could have had a few goals.”
This win marks the start of a testing week for Manchester United as they face difficult trips to Chelsea and Liverpool, but Ferguson insists the 4-0 win over Wigan is the perfect tonic ahead of a difficult week.
He said, “There are big games ahead and it is a good start to the week.
“To win 4-0 away from home at a place like Wigan is very good. We were very pleased with the result but it is an acid test this week, going to Chelsea going to Liverpool.
“Hopefully I will have one or two players back but I was delighted with my players today.”
