New Arsenal Signing Sebastien Squillaci Strengthens Claim For First Team Place After Playing 90 Minutes For Reserves
Frenchman impresses in 4-3 win...
By Eliot Rothwell
Recent Arsenal signing Sebastien Squillaci completed 90 minutes on his reserve team debut on Tuesday night.
The former Sevilla defender partnered Johan Djourou in the 4-3 win over Blackburn Rovers and pitted his wits against experienced Premier League strikers Jason Roberts and former Manchester City player Benjani.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scored the winner for the Gunners after David Dunn had twice pulled goals back for Blackburn.
Having not played a competitive fixture this season, Arsene Wenger will have used the game to test the Frenchman's fitness and physical condition whilst playing for Neil Banfield's reserve side.
Squillaci will compete with Thomas Vermaelen, Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny for a place at the heart of the Arsenal defence.
It remains to be seen whether Wenger will hand the former Sevilla man his first-team debut at the Emirates against Owen Coyle's Bolton this weekend.
