Robin van Persie is set to miss the start of Arsenal's Champions League campaign after he was ruled out until mid-October with an ankle injury.

Van Persie, 27, picked up the knock in the 2-1 victory against Blackburn Rovers and was forced to sit out the Netherlands' opening Euro 2012 qualifiers. The striker is set to remain on the sidelines for up to six weeks more week, the Gunners confirmed today.

A statement on the club website read: "Robin van Persie will have to wait a little longer before he is back in the first-team frame. The Dutchman injured his ankle against Blackburn Rovers on August 28 and will be sidelined for longer than first anticipated.

"Van Persie is likely to be out of action until mid-October."

The prognosis will see the ex-Feyenoord man miss the matches Braga and Partizan Belgrade. He should also miss the trip to Chelsea on October 3, as well as four other Premier League games.

In better news, Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri is expected to make his return to training after knee surgery several weeks ahead of schedule.
