West Bromwich Albion New Boy Paul Scharner Excited By Prospect Of Regular Midfield Role
Di Matteo promises Austrian he’ll stick to midfield...
By John Elmes
Versatile footballer Paul Scharner has spoken of his excitement at the chance to play in his favoured midfield role at new club West Bromwich Albion.
The former Wigan Athletic utility man joined the Baggies on transfer deadline day after four-and-a-half-years at the DW Stadium came to an end over the summer.
While at Wigan, the number of positions he was made to cover irritated Scharner, but new boss Roberto Di Matteo has assured him he will be employed solely in midfield at The Hawthorns.
“I decided before the transfer window that I wanted to focus on one position," Scharner told BBC West Midlands.
"I decided on midfield. The manager [Roberto Di Matteo] gave me that position and I want to prove that it’s the right position for me.”
Although the big Austrian understands his usefulness around the pitch he felt he would make the best use of his skills in an attacking role.
“I decided on midfield because of my attacking power and I want to show everyone that it’s the right position for me. It will be tough, of course, but I'm quite confident,” he said.
Without a club over the summer, Scharner has been training on his own and hopes to be fit for West Bromwich’s next fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
He said: “I tried really, really hard to get very fit for a new challenge. I had an eight-week pre-season with different conditioning coaches and my private technique coach.
“It all went very well, I just need to get up to match-fitness but I'm looking forward to the first game because it should be a tough one."
