Phil Jagielka believes that he can permanently displace either Rio Ferdinand or John Terry and claim a regular starting role for England.
The Everton defender started in an international friendly against Hungary last month, and played a significant role in the Three Lions' recent 4-0 victory over Bulgaria in the Euro 2012 qualifiers.
With the next game against Switzerland only a stone's throw away, the 28-year-old is likely to be given a look in again owing to the defensive problems that have plagued manager Fabio Capello in recent times.
Now the 28-year-old - who has earned only five caps thus far - insists that he hopes to grab the opportunity with both hands, and replace either one of the experienced Ferdinand or Terry.
"It's always hard to displace players like JT [Terry] and Rio," Jagielka said, according to The Guardian. "But I would like to think I can.
"If Rio and JT come back fit for the next squad and are in form and get picked, they are not bad players to be behind.
"But I'd like to put real pressure on them, that's what it's all about, and I'm sure the manager wants that as well. He's always said he wants to pick from players who are in form, so if I can keep playing international football and keep keeping clean sheets then, hopefully, it cranks up the pressure a bit."
