Manchester United Veteran Paul Scholes: I Thought I Would Have Retired By Now
Midfielder to keep on playing as long as he is contributing...
By Matt Monaghan
Manchester United veteran Paul Scholes has admitted a U-turn in form convinced him to put off retirement at the end of last season.
Scholes, 35, has been at his scintillating best in the early weeks of this season and turned down an international recall for World Cup 2010. These displays are a welcome boost to the legendary midfielder who had his displays criticised before the New Year.
Speaking to MUTV, Scholes revealed he considered hanging up his boots after he failed to reach his own high standards.
He said: "At Christmas last season I did not think I would be playing in this one.
"I wasn't playing well enough.
"The season before last I had an injury for three months and then from Christmas onwards my form wasn't brilliant. Leading up to Christmas last year it still wasn't great.
"I wasn't playing as much as I would have liked but you need to be playing well to get into the team.
"I set myself high standards. I want to feel as though I am contributing to the team. If I am not doing that what is the point of being here."
