Aston Villa are believed to be seriously considering former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier to become their director of football.
The Birmingham-based club have been on the hunt for a new manager following the exit of Martin O'Neill just prior to the start of the season.
Caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald was appointed to manage the affairs of the club on a temporary basis, but the Scottish boss has experienced largely mixed results during his stint at the helm of the club.
An opening day 3-0 victory over West Ham United proved to be a positive start for MacDonald, but a bitter 6-0 loss to Newcastle United followed by an exit - for the second time - from the Europa League play-off stage against Rapid Vienna brought about some criticism.
But the gaffer has since guided his side to a victory over Everton, while throwing his hat into the ring to turn his appointment into a permanent one.
Now The Guardian reports that the club are mulling over the potential appointment of Houllier as a director of football, to work with MacDonald and help him in running the show smoothly.
It is believed that Villa could be considering such an option, as putting Houllier under the pressure of a managerial position may not bode well with his health.
