Tottenham Hotspur forward Jermain Defoe has welcomed new boy Rafael van der Vaart to White Hart Lane, insisting that everyone at the club is looking forward to working with the Dutchman.

The 27-year-old completed a nail biting £8 million move from Real Madrid to Spurs, after the Premier League ratified the transfer following a small period of uncertainty.

The former Ajax midfielder was initially supposed to move to north London on a season-long loan, but Real pulled out of the deal five minutes before the transfer deadline, as exclusively revealed by Goal.com.

But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made an improved offer to acquire the services of the player, which was accepted by the Spanish club - and eventually given the green light by the Premier League.

Now Defoe has hailed the signing and is looking forward to playing with the "technically gifted" attacking midfielder.

"It's an amazing signing. What a player," he said, according to The Mirror.

"I remember playing for England Under-21's against Rafael when he was with Holland's Under-21 side and he was a special player back then.

"He will definitely help the team. He will always wants the ball, he is technically gifted and he is at his best playing between the lines and making things happen.

"It's an excellent signing and everyone is looking forward to playing alongside him."
