Magpies move for World Cup star...

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Ivory Coast midfielder Cheik Tiote from FC Twente, subject to a work permit.

According to Sky Sports, Tiote, who featured in all three of his country's World Cup 2010 games in South Africa, passed a medical in the north east on Sunday after finalising terms.

The deal, worth a reported €4.2 million (£3.5m), will see the 24-year-old Ivorian fight for a place in the Magpies midfield along with current central pairing Joey Barton and Alan Smith.

Tiote becomes manager Chris Hughton's third summer signing as the Toon Army try to stay in the Premier League, after the arrivals of Sol Campbell from Arsenal and Dan Gosling from Everton.
