Raul Meireles has been left out of Porto's Europa League play-off squad fuelling rumours of an imminent switch to Manchester United, according to A Bola.

Meireles, 27, is understood to be Sir Alex Ferguson's back up target after he missed out of the signing of Mesut Oezil to Real Madrid. The Portgual World Cup 2010 star is not believed to be injured and his value would have been slashed if he appeared in tomorrow night's first leg clash against Genk.

With Owen Hargreaves struggling to save his career, the all action midfielder is believed to have been targeted as the man to replace him in the United squad. At a press conference yesterday, Ferguson left the door open for Meireles after refusing to declare his summer transfer business had been finished by the signings of Bebe, Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez.
