Vermaelen, was handed the captain’s armband as Arsenal drew 1-1 with AC Milan in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.
However after the game the Belgian international revealed he was impressed with his new defensive partner.
“He [Koscielny] played well,” Vermaelen told Sky Sports News
“I knew that [he would], I saw it in training as well. He’s good at marking, he’s short, he’s aggressive and that showed today.”
Vermaelen was also asked about whether the parntnership is beginning to work in which he stated: "It's the boss's decisions who's going to play. We know each other's qualities, that shouldn't be a problem."
Despite the positives, Vermaelen was disappointed with the draw and feels Arsenal should have won the game.
“We wanted to win, but we didn’t so we are not that happy.”
