Aston Villa Manager Martin O'Neill: No New Bid From Manchester City For James Milner
Player to stay if valuation isn't met...
By Matt Monaghan
Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has insisted James Milner has a future at the club if Manchester City fail to match their £30 million valuation.
Milner, 24, has been linked with a big money switch to Eastlands all summer after a £20 million bid was rejected in May. Villa have dug their feet in about the midfielder and have refused to do business.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, O'Neill insisted no movement had been made to resurrect the deal in recent days.
"It is no further forward since I spoke to you a few days ago," O'Neill stated.
"James is with us here [in Portugal] so I haven't heard anything. It is the owner and chief executive who are dealing with it."
Villa have experience of prolonged negotiations after holding onto then-captain Gareth Barry two years ago in the face of sustained interest from Liverpool. The England international went on to enjoyed a stellar season for the club before eventually signing for City, and O'Neill is convinced Milner will react in the same way if he stayed in the Midlands.
"The fact is we had a situation with Gareth Barry a couple of seasons ago. The move to Liverpool didn't materialise," he noted.
"We put a valuation on him, it was't met and Gareth came back to play some of the best football of his career and James is certainly in the same mould."
