Manchester United Season Ticket Base 'Overvalued', Says Bank

Glazers not as safe from fan boycott as 17,000-strong waiting list suggests

Manchester United have always brushed off the threat of a season ticket boycott by disaffected fans, pointing to the club's huge waiting list for seats as reassurance, but the figure of 17,000 in line may be misleading, according to JP Morgan.

The investment bank was one of those behind the recent £500 million bond issue, and, reports the Mail Online, published a research paper last week that calls into question one of the club's main buffers against financial damage by protesting supporters.

"We note that 17,000 people are on the waiting list for Manchester United season tickets," the research paper says.
"However, this somewhat overstates the demand as we note that no deposits have been paid and many seek specific seats in the stadium."

This insight suggests there may have been more than public relations behind the Glazer family's decision to freeze season ticket prices for the coming season, suggesting the owners might not be keen to push core fans' patience in the present climate.
