Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has backed the current squad to beat Chelsea on the way to another successful season.

United face the Blues on Saturday at Old Trafford, with the winner gaining a massive advantage in the race for the Premier League title. And Robson believes the United players' self-belief will give them the edge.

"We're in the middle of a hugely significant week, a massive eight days for everyone at the club," Robson told United's official website.

"If the lads believe in themselves - which I'm sure they do - then and I'm confident that we will come out with positive results."

United have two crucial games in the space of five days, with Bayern Munich visiting Old Trafford on Wednesday in the Champions League. Sir Alex Ferguson's side are behind 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg, but Robson believes they will be prepared for the challenge.

"In a big week like this you need to take care of yourself mentally and physically," he said.

"The players have got to just keep themselves ticking over in training, while your preparation in terms of diet, nutrition and resting at the right times has to be as good as at any time in your career.

"You want to give yourself every opportunity to be as fit as you possibly can for these games."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has suggested Chelsea's early exit from European competition gives them the edge in the title race, but Robson believes the opposite is true.

"Some people have said Chelsea getting knocked out of the Champions League was a good thing for their title chances, but you don’t want to be knocked out of that competition," he pointed out.

"Winning on Wednesday [against Bayern] would do our chances of silverware at home and abroad no end of good. You want to be playing in the big games and have the momentum of winning them."
