The former England international defender went under the knife 'Down Under' last week and will now remain there for three weeks to recuperate.
The 30-year-old has only figured on three occasions for Spurs this season, with his last appearance coming in the 9-1 demolition of Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane in November.
“The people there feel they have the right answer,” Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp told BBC Sport.
“There is no real chance he'll play again this season.”
Woodgate has suffered a succession of injuries throughout his career. He achieved just 10 appearances in thee campaigns at Real Madrid after joining the Spanish giants from Newcastle United in 2004.
While a back injury meant he missed the 2006 World Cup, he had an operation to cure a groin strain at the end of the 2008-09 season and was forced to undergo minor surgery for the same problem again in August.
Redknapp has also had to contend with a number of first-team players on the treatment table, including captain Ledley King, Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Jenas, David Bentley and Aaron Lennon.
However, despite a glut of absentees Spurs still ran out comfortable 3-1 winners against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday to make a significant claim for fourth spot.
