Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted his disappointment after former Old Trafford star Cristiano Ronaldo was eliminated from the Champions League following Real Madrid’s draw with Lyon at the Bernabeu.

The Red Devils boss had expected to face his former starlet in this season’s competition, but conceded that his side would have struggled to contain the Portuguese international.

"In my mind, I had a thought that, somewhere along the line, we were going to meet them [Real Madrid] and Ronaldo would be up against us,” spoke Ferguson ahead of Sunday's game with Fulham.

"We would have needed a machine gun to stop him!"

"I am disappointed for Ronaldo not having qualified. We had someone at the game [against Lyon] and the report was he [Ronaldo] was absolutely fantastic.”

Had United been drawn against Ronaldo, it would have been the Red Devils second reunion with a former hero, following David Beckham’s return to Old Trafford with Milan.

Meanwhile, it appears that Ferguson may have neighbourly competition in his reported attempts to lure his another starlet to Old Trafford, with Nigerian Under-17 midfielder Ramon Azeez attracting interest from rivals Manchester City, according to reports in the Mail .
