England Have To 'Earn The Right' To Host World Cup - Former Chelsea Star Paul Elliott

England is the right choice, reckons 2018 bid member...

Former Chelsea star Paul Elliott has warned that the team behind the England 2018 World Cup bid cannot afford to rest on their laurels and assume FIFA will award them the tournament simply because of the country's rich footballing history.

England's bid process has not always run smoothly, with reported squabbling between members throwing plans off track.

Elliot, who is also on the 2018 bid board, accepts that the team needs to get its act together and prove it can host one of the world's biggest sporting events.

"We've got no divine right to host this," Elliot said at the Global Sports Forum in Barcelona on Wednesday.

"We've got to earn the right like everybody else and that's why I tend to look on the half-full end not the half-empty end when you're talking about the political side of it."

England were unsuccessful in a similar bid to host the 2006 tournament, which European rival Germany eventually earned the right to host. Elliot believes lessons have been learned from that failure.

"That's what we have done, we have learned from the experience of 2006 and think that has been the difference," he said.

"We've been very sensible, very measured and very humble in our approach. But we are also showing off our assets to let the world know what we've got and what this means to our country if we are fortunate enough to get the 2018 World Cup."

FIFA have recently been careful to ensure the tournament is rotated among different continents, with South Africa (this summer) and Brazil (2014) in line to host the next two tournaments.

With both countries reportedly facing some difficulties in getting organised before their respective tournaments, Elliot believes England will be an attractive choice for 2018.

"We are a safe pair of hands because we are so developed," he noted.

"For 2018 there is a compelling argument that we are a viable commercial partner for FIFA and it is that commercial strength that enhances our ability to give more back to the world.

"If you look at the current tournament in South Africa and the one coming up in 2014 in Brazil there are obvious benefits in terms of what the World Cup is doing for those two countries.

"I think FIFA are correct in doing what they have done where South Africa and Brazil are concerned and it has to be proportionately spread around the world.

"That is the social message of football, how it can be used to do so much within communities, within stadia and developing long-term infrastructure and legacy. Our aim is to provide that in 2018."

Urby Emanuelson has also spoken, revealing that he thinks Milan can win the Champions League based on tonight's performance:

“We played wonderfully tonight, and Ibra was amazing. Everyone talks about Barcelona and Madrid, but if we always play like tonight we could win this competition.

“You have to consider that we still have a lot of injuries. Look what Boateng did after just coming back – that speaks volumes.

“When everyone is available for selection, I'm sure we can win the Champions League.”

Milan owner and former Italy prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has this to say:

“I said to Ibrahimovic not to use his hands (in reference to slapping a Napoli player at the weekend) and only his feet – he did that tonight.

“He reminded me of Van Basten, whom I am very happy for with his new job at Heerenveen.

“As for the future, we already have a great coach in Allegri and we're very happy with him. I speak to him and give him suggestions as I did with all my previous coaches.

“Champions League or Scudetto? We will try to win everything, and I think we can do just that. We had a lot of injuries, but we have a big squad, so we should be able to compete on all fronts.”

And now we have some reaction from San Siro, courtesy of our man in the field Sergio Stanco...

Robert Zeliang has this to say of Arsene Wenger: "Wrong tactics, fool. Arsenal have dug their own graves.”

Meanwhile, Tonde Chitonho has asked Thierry Henry to take Arsene Wenger back to the US with him!

And on the subject of Henry, Rizky Ferdiansyah humorously added: “King Henry couldn't beat the Prince Boateng!”

After the match, I took to Facebook and Twitter again to get some fan reaction. Lets take a look at what our readers have to say:

Joel Peeperkoorn feels that Arsenal should rest their big guns in the second leg, saying: “There's no way we can beat Milan by five goals."

Jez Cook, however, takes a different perspective, singing himself back to positivity: “FIVE FOUR we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four ....FIVE FOUR we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four ...FIVE FOUR - just keep repeating it.”

Well, you have to admire his fighting spirit...
